Pro Image 100 was first engineered and released in 1997 as a film that fit in between Kodak's amateur and professional lines. Especially designed for the Asian and South-American markets, it is known for its exceptional stability and endurance to extreme temperature and humidity conditions.
This film was later introduced to the European and North-American markets around 2018. For whatever reason, it never became as popular as other Kodak films, and even today it is a hard find in any physical or online shop. This makes this film very sought after by its fans, not only for its scarcity, but also for its unique photographic qualities.
Pro Image 100 is an evolution of the 6th generation Gold 100 from the 90s. However, it offers very different results to the 7th and currrent generation of Gold 200, or any other high speed film from Kodak, like PORTRA 160 or Ektar 100.
This film offers high saturation, but milder than Gold or Ektar. The color accuracy and the reproduction of skin tones is also very good. Compared to Gold 200 or Ultra-Max 400, it has a slightly less warmth to it, offering a more neutral color rendition that gives a more realistic but vivid look.
In comparison with the other films branded as "Kodak Professional", this is undubtfully more saturated than PORTRA 160 or PORTRA 400, but also way less than Ektar 100, especially when it comes to skin tones. Greens and reds are intense but not overwhelming, so this is perfectly fine both for portrait and for landscape photography.
Its fast speed ISO 100/21º allows this film to offer a very fine grain, although not at the level than the PORTRA films. It can also be shot at ISO 200/24º or even ISO 400/27º, with nearly identical results when it comes to resolution, but more intense colors and a more picturesque result, perfect for more casual shots, street photography or travel photography.
Very enjoyable if you are going after a classic 90s Kodak look, or a similar experience to Lomography Color 100.
